Before switching to a low-carb diet a few years ago, Amber had a host of health problems, including obesity, severe acid reflux, rosacea, prediabetes, and high blood pressure. Now a Revero coach who helps others along their carnivore journey, Amber shares her story about how she healed from these conditions and is off all of her medications!
For two years, Amber had a great deal of success on a low-carb ketogenic diet. “Before I started keto, I was extremely obese, weighing around 240 pounds at 5’2”,” Amber shares with Revero coach Yecca. “I had super high blood pressure, and I was on four different medications, including a diuretic, and Nexium for acid reflux.” Amber’s acid reflux was so severe that it affected her ability to sleep. While at the hospital for an unrelated issue, Amber’s doctor was so concerned about her high blood pressure that she was immediately put on medication to reduce it.
Another cause for concern was Amber’s poor digestion. “I had really severe abdominal pain, lots of cramping, bloating, and constipation. It was miserable!” After a battery of tests, Amber’s doctor added another diagnosis to the list: pre-diabetes. Given her family’s history of diabetes, Amber knew something had to change.
“The keto diet improved my digestion and I was able to get off three blood pressure medications,” Amber explains. “Keto also helped clear up my severe rosacea, but it just wasn’t enough.” Compared to the low-fat, high-carb diets Amber had tried over the years, the keto diet was certainly an improvement. “I was a huge advocate for keto, because it seemed like a wonder diet!”
Since her health issues weren’t completely resolved, Amber took the advice of a friend and transitioned over to a carnivore diet. “In order to be a better advocate for this way of life, I wanted to explore the full spectrum of low-carb diets,” Amber recalls. Initially, she included all dairy and various types of meat, but eventually cut down on her dairy intake to see if it improved her digestion. After a few months on a meat-based diet (mostly beef), Amber successfully added dairy back in and has not experienced any issues.
A typical day of eating for Amber starts in the afternoon. “I’ll have an 8-oz burger for lunch and 5 slices of bacon. For dinner, I’ll have another 10 oz burger without bacon or steak if it’s the weekend.” Amber sticks to this simple menu, and occasionally will swap in different meats, but finds she is most satisfied with leaner cuts of red meat (with butter) versus chicken or pork.
Since she was already following a keto lifestyle and knew about maintaining healthy electrolyte levels, Amber had very few issues transitioning over to carnivore. Her results have been fantastic! “I am now off ALL of my medication and I take zero supplements. I was also surprised at how much better my digestion is on a meat-based diet.” With the extra boost from a carnivore diet, Amber traded rosacea, heartburn and painful digestion for healthier hair, skin and nails.
And perhaps most exciting? Amber continues to thrive as a Certified Carnivore Coach and a huge advocate for this lifestyle!
