From Despair to Recovery: A 77-Year-Old’s Journey
At 77 years old, Pierre has transformed his health through the power of low-carb and carnivore nutrition. Living near Fort Lauderdale after retiring as an electronics engineer, Pierre spent decades battling multiple health conditions that conventional medicine couldn’t resolve.
“I had no idea what metabolic issues were when I started having psoriasis in my early twenties,” Pierre explains. “It got worse over the years, especially when I returned to the UK with no sun and more processed food.”
The Wake-Up Call That Changed Everything
Pierre’s health deteriorated significantly, eventually leading to a serious wound under his right big toe that became infected. “I didn’t see it because of neuropathy. It became seriously infected, and I had to go into the hospital for intravenous antibiotics. Eventually, they had to amputate the big toe.”
This traumatic experience served as his wake-up call. “I was morbidly obese at 280 pounds on a 5’7″ frame, with a BMI of 44. I had to use an extender belt when flying, couldn’t put on socks, and couldn’t tie my shoelaces.”
Discovering a New Path Through Nutrition
In November 2018, Pierre came across information about fasting and low-carb eating. “I started keto and intermittent fasting with a 16:8 schedule. Within six months, I’d lost 67 pounds.”
Eventually, Pierre continued his nutritional journey, moving toward a more carnivore-focused approach. “These days, I’m up to about 95% meat and very little plant material. If I go out socially, I might order a meal with broccoli or a salad, but mainly steak or ribs.”
Challenging Medical Conventions
Throughout his decades of treatment for type 2 diabetes, Pierre received minimal nutritional guidance from medical professionals. “My endocrinologist would just say, ‘Go easy on the carbs.’ But there was no real nutritional advice at all.”
One revealing moment came when Pierre’s doctor attempted to calculate his insulin dosage. “He said, ‘Well, you eat like 140 grams of carbs a day?’ And I said, ‘No, I eat zero carbs. I don’t eat any carbs.’ That absolutely stopped him in his tracks. He couldn’t process that.”
Dramatic Health Transformation
The results speak for themselves. “I’ve lost up to 98 pounds at my lowest weight. I was previously taking 240 units of insulin per day, with prescriptions that must have cost $10,000-15,000 a year.”
Pierre’s psoriasis, which previously required expensive treatment costing roughly $40,000 annually, has significantly improved through nutritional changes. “It’s not completely gone away, but it has basically stabilized over the last six years. That’s very positive, and I wasn’t expecting that.”
Heart Health Improvements
Concerned about cardiovascular health, Pierre tracked his coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, which was initially very high at 2,296. Despite medical warnings and pressure to take statins, Pierre continued with his low-carb, carnivore-focused approach.
“Over six years, my CAC score is basically the same. It’s stabilized at around 2,312, which is essentially unchanged from my first test. Diet is very critical to my heart health.”
Quality of Life Restoration
Today, Pierre’s quality of life has dramatically improved. “When you’re overweight and you trip over, getting up is extremely difficult. People just could not manage to help me up because I was so heavy.”
Simple daily activities are now manageable again. “Not having to deal with extender belts on aircraft, being able to put on socks, and tie my shoes—it’s really good.”
Pierre stays active by cycling at least an hour daily when weather permits. His blood glucose levels now average around 110-115, putting his A1C around 6, which is a significant improvement from his previous numbers.
Spreading the Message
Pierre now shares his experiences with others facing similar diagnoses. “What makes me happy is seeing people asking the questions. I see people thinking the end of the world has happened when they’re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at 45—but they can do something about it now. I didn’t start my journey until I was 70 years old, with a lot of damage done that could have been avoided.”
Through his remarkable transformation, Pierre demonstrates that it’s never too late to reclaim your health through nutritional changes, even after decades of conventional treatment.
