D. G.loses weight and improves health on a carnivore diet

D.G. was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over 20 years ago. Now 72, he has been able to lose weight, control his blood sugar, and amaze his doctor with his results following a carnivore diet for two months.

D.G. has taken various oral medications to control his type 2 diabetes. “Back in early July, I had a blood draw at my doctor’s office, and my A1C was 7.5%.” For reference, a normal A1C is below 5.7%. Anything above 6.4% indicates diabetes. “At the time, I was on the generic form of Actos and the maximum daily dose of Metformin.”

Based on his glucose levels remaining high, D.G.s doctor wanted to prescribe a third diabetes medication to help bring his blood sugar down, but D.G. wished to avoid this if possible. “I told my doctor I would try to ‘eat better’ and see if that helped improve my numbers. I’ve tried numerous diets in the past and have had some success, but I usually regained some of the weight over time.”

D.G. visited an online forum for patients with diabetes and began searching for diets that seemed to work well for others in the community. “I saw a reference to the carnivore diet, and I was intrigued. I had struggled with another attempt at a low-fat/low-calorie diet, so I was ready to try something new.”

After searching for more info on the carnivore diet, D.G. was ready to commit to it for 45 days and monitor his results. “In mid-August, I started the carnivore diet. In addition to meat, I included coffee, eggs, and some cheese.”

After 56 days, D.G. went in for another blood draw and was surprised by his results. “On my own, I had eliminated the generic Actos and reduced my Metformin by 50%. When I told my doctor this, I could tell he was not pleased I had done this on my own, but I did provide him with daily fasting glucose and blood pressure readings to support what I had done.” (Note: In an abundance of caution, we strongly recommend that patients do not make changes to their medication without the supervision of their healthcare provider.)

“After 56 days, my weight had gone down by almost 19 pounds, and my body fat percentage was down 4.8%, according to my smart scale readings.”

D.G.’s doctor called him the next day and gave him the good news: “My A1C was down to 5.9%, so he further reduced my Metformin dosage by another 50%. He sounded amazed and impressed when he informed me of my new A1C measurement.”

Though D.G. is still early on his carnivore journey, he plans to continue eating this way and will work closely with his doctor to further reduce or eliminate his diabetes medication. Like many others who are prediabetic or diabetic, a meat-based diet is a wonderful way to control blood sugar levels naturally and effectively without risking side effects from medication.

Results are not typical. All viewers of this content, especially those taking prescription or over-the-counter medications, should consult their physicians before beginning any nutrition, supplement or lifestyle program.
