Jordan treated his feelings of depression on a carnivore diet

Jordan suffered from chronic depression since puberty, and he describes the last few years before starting his carnivore journey with one word: “hopelessness”. Now 23 years old and in his best health ever, Jordan shares his incredible healing journey with Revero coach (and his friend in real life!) Nathan.

Football was a big part of Jordan’s life in high school, and it’s one of the main factors that led him to overeating and reaching his heaviest weight of 321 pounds. “I just started eating more and more, and getting bigger and bigger. I was consuming what felt like 10,000 calories a day, and just used football as the excuse for such excessive amounts of food.” Jordan also was extremely low in energy, and would often sleep 12-16 hours per day. “I was just so big and unhappy.”

Years later, Jordan recognized that he wasn’t lazy, but the hopelessness he felt was from depression. “Nothing was fun to me back then, and I had no confidence whatsoever,” he recalls. “I realized I didn’t want to play football anymore, and I decided at that point to finally lose the extra weight.” Jordan began a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting, and was tracking his macros.

“I had twelve people at a lunch table telling me keto would never work,” Jordan recalls. “But over the course of a year, I lost 120 pounds, going from 320 pounds to 177 pounds.” Even with this staggering weight loss, Jordan still wasn’t feeling his best. He still lacked focus and motivation in his life, and he suspected there may be some foods that he was reacting to negatively. “Nothing was changing mentally for me,” he says. “I wasn’t going anywhere in life. I remember praying that God would send me some sort of relief.”

Watching Mikhaila Peterson on the “Mind Pump” podcast as she described what depression felt like and discovering Dr. Shawn Baker’s content, Jordan was introduced to how others had found healing from depression and autoimmune conditions on a meat-based diet. He decided to go for it and hasn’t looked back since!

“I felt like a veil had been lifted over my life,” he recalls. “I no longer sleep the day away. I can get five or six hours of sleep and have energy and mental clarity throughout the day. I can now pay attention and focus on things easily.” Jordan says that the best way he can confirm the shift is comparing it to how he feels if he veers away from the diet or adds foods like vegetables, grains, or sugar back in. “It’s heartbreaking the first day back after I’ve cheated,” Jordan explains. “I literally can’t think straight, it’s like having a brain deficiency.”

This has helped Jordan stay true to this way of eating, and he has no problem committing to eating just ribeye steak, ground beef, fat trimmings, water and salt for his meals. Today, Jordan is thriving at 23 years old and has lost a total of 150 pounds. His hope is that people will start connecting the dots of their health issues. “If you’re at the point where you don’t want to be depressed anymore, just try a carnivore diet for 30 or 60 days,” Jordan advises. “The absolute worst thing that will happen is you lose some body fat!”

2023 update: This interview was recorded in 2020. Jordan is now married to Mikhaila Peterson!
