Dave began his carnivore journey after being on the “weight rollercoaster” his entire life. He remembers weighing in at 155 pounds in gym class while in the third grade. “I had always done well with low-carb diets like keto, but I always stalled out after a while, and would manage to overindulge or have too many cheat meals,” Dave explains. “Something hugely emotional would happen to me and I would go off the rails again.”
Before finding success with a carnivore diet, Dave suffered from severe inflammatory conditions including acne inversa, which resulted in large, painful boils under his arms, rheumatoid arthritis, and lymphedema. “My arthritis symptoms have improved greatly, and I haven’t had a single boil in seven months while eating a meat-based diet,” Dave shares. “It’s almost like you’re being ‘punked’, because that’s how it feels when you switch over to this way of eating and you see the massive differences in your body, how you feel and how you look. It’s wildly different!”
Dave found it relatively easy to switch over to a carnivore diet. Since Dave struggles with food moderation, he found the strict list of carnivore foods was easier for him to stick to. “It’s far easier for me to say I won’t eat any of that at all than it is for me to have just one,” he says. “I much prefer now to just eat a bunch of steak.” Abstaining from carbs and plant food has certainly paid off for Dave, who has lost 128 pounds in the last ten months on a meat-based diet.
Joe Rogan was the push that Dave needed to finally take the plunge into the world of carnivore. He and his wife recall hearing about Dr. Jordan Peterson’s meat, salt and water diet. “I thought it was crazy, as much as I love the idea of eating steak and bacon every day!” he recalls thinking. After hearing Dr. Shawn Baker’s interview with Joe Rogan, he finally decided to give it a try. “I wasn’t going back to old habits this time, I wasn’t going to fail again. I needed to do this for my wife, my three sons, and I never want them to feel how I felt when I lost my mom at 61 years old from kidney failure.”
Dave did experience some pushback at the beginning of his journey. “The dogma is strong!” Dave jokes. “It may not be for everybody, but if you can figure out what’s right for your body, run with it!” Dave’s been going to the same doctor for 29 years, and his doctor is astounded with the weight loss and improvement in triglycerides and other health markers since Dave has followed this way of eating.
Dave reports experiencing more mental clarity, feeling less anxious, and was able to hike Mt. Washington with his family. Dave eats one meal a day including different cuts of fatty meat, bacon, and some butter. Dave’s advice for carnivore newbies is simple, “Get started now. You just have to fully commit, throw everything in it and push yourself to see it through.”
