Apryl: Beating Carb Addiction and Chronic Disease with a Meat-Based Diet

For April, a 68-year-old real estate agent and grandmother living in Delaware, a lifetime of navigating the standard “low-fat” food pyramid led to severe, compounding metabolic failure. Raised on processed cereals and taught to fear natural fats, her struggles with weight intensified during her childbearing years, culminating in gestational diabetes during her last pregnancy.

Despite being advised to use a glucometer, conventional guidelines provided no real path forward. “The pamphlets were all from the American Diabetes Association, and there wasn’t a single low-carb recipe,” April recalls. “I was constantly yo-yoing, getting confused by the guidelines, and my weight just ballooned.”

By her mid-60s, April’s physical health reached a critical breaking point:

  • Severe Metabolic Syndrome: Her weight climbed to 217 pounds.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Her HbA1c soared to a dangerous 7.8% (and likely higher prior to testing), accompanied by fasting triglycerides over 300 mg/dL.
  • Cardiovascular Distress: She developed a high resting heart rate, severe hypertension, and full-blown Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib), requiring cardiac medication.
  • Systemic Pain & Brain Fog: She suffered from daily arthritic joint pain and persistent cognitive fatigue.

“I was a complete carb addict, and I couldn’t stop,” April says. “My kids and husband were terrified for me.”

The Warning and the Turning Point

Prompted by her daughter, April began researching ancestral health online, discovering the work of Michaela Peterson and Dr. Ken Berry. Recognizing that her severe cravings were driven by carbohydrate addiction, she and her husband transitioned from dirty keto directly into strict, zero-plant carnivore nutrition in October 2023.

Her cardiologist was horrified when April revealed her plan to resolve her diabetes through a ketogenic framework. “She told me, ‘You can’t do a ketogenic diet. You can’t sustain that, and you’ll get ketoacidosis and die. Promise me you’ll get on medication.'”

Refusing to accept a future of daily pharmaceuticals and declining health, April pushed forward with her meat-based protocol.

The Timeline of Recovery

The biological response to removing plant sugars and seed oils unfolded rapidly over her two-year journey:

  • MONTH 3 (CARDIOVASCULAR NORMALIZATION): April’s resting heart rate stabilized, her A-Fib episodes ceased, and her blood pressure dropped back to normal youthful baselines (110/70 mmHg) without blood pressure drugs.
  • MONTH 6 (WEIGHT & JOINT RELIEF): She dropped 40 pounds, her arthritic joint pain completely vanished, and her cognitive fatigue lifted.
  • MONTH 10 TO YEAR 1 (DIABETES REMISSION): Her HbA1c dropped from 7.8% down to 6.0%, eventually stabilizing at a completely non-diabetic 5.4%. Her fasting insulin dropped into optimal ranges without ever taking diabetes medication.
  • SUSTAINED VITALITY: April lost 50 pounds total. By incorporating intermittent fasting once fully fat-adapted, she gained the mental clarity and energy required to study for and pass her health coaching certification at age 68.

Overcoming the Addictive Loop

As a certified health coach, April views carbohydrate dependence through the clear lens of addiction. She emphasizes that for true carb addicts, “moderation” keeps the brain’s dopamine noise alive.

“Carb addiction has all the hallmarks of drug or alcohol addiction,” April notes. “Abstinence reduces the noise, but reintroducing a little bit makes you fall down the rabbit hole again. Carnivore quieted that noise and gave me back my life.”

Today, April fuels her active lifestyle with ruminant meats, animal fats, and water—playing with her grandchildren, exercising, and enjoying a restored baseline that feels 20 years younger.

“My cardiologist told me a ketogenic diet would kill me. Instead, I reversed my type 2 diabetes, cured my A-Fib, lost 50 pounds, and got off all medications. Real food didn’t kill me—it saved my life.”
