Bob: Starting Carnivore At 88 And Breaking World Records

Bob McBride has lived many lives: Golden Gloves boxer at 17, UCLA crew rower, and a holistic dentist for over half a century. But by age 88, the man known for his lifelong vitality hit a wall. He had undergone a coronary stent in 2018 and a stroke in 2022. He was struggling with “heavy leg syndrome,” compromised blood flow, and chronic back pain that made walking a neighborhood block feel like a gauntlet.

“I didn’t want to even get up and walk because it hurt so much,” Bob recalls. Even in his own dental practice, he had reached a point where his assistant had to tie his magnifying loops on because his right shoulder was so stuck and painful he couldn’t reach behind his head. He was facing a retirement defined by limitations—until he decided to stop letting the “old man” in.

The Food Pyramid Failure

As a holistic dentist, Bob had always been “health-conscious,” but he realized he had been following the wrong map. “I was going by the food pyramid,” he says. “Then I looked at the science and said, ‘Wait a minute, I was all wrong.'”

He realized that the grains and plant-based foods he had been taught were healthy were likely contributing to the inflammation locking up his joints and the oxalates potentially causing issues in his system. At 88 years old, Bob didn’t “ease” into a change. He went cold turkey, quitting all plant foods and shifting to a strict carnivore diet of beef and water.

The 90-Plus Apostle

The transformation was, in Bob’s words, a “second youth.” The inflammation that had made his legs feel like lead and his neck feel “locked up” vanished. Within two years of starting Carnivore, Bob didn’t just return to walking—he returned to the elite world of competitive rowing.

The victories at age 91 are staggering:

THE WORLD RECORDS: Bob got on a Concept 2 rower and began knocking out world records for his age group. He currently holds the 90+ world record for the 10,000-meter row (43 minutes) and the 100-meter sprint (19 seconds).

TOTAL MOBILITY: Following a reverse shoulder replacement and his dietary shift, Bob has reclaimed a full range of motion. He can now perform tasks—and rowing splits—that people decades younger struggle to achieve.

MENTAL VITALITY: Bob describes a surge in confidence and “Elon” (élan/vitality). He is currently writing a narrative review with over 200 peer-reviewed references on the trifecta of nutrition, exercise, and sleep.

A Legacy of Strength

Bob and his wife of 67 years (who is 85 and also thrives on a meat-based diet) are a testament to the power of ancestral living. He views Carnivore not as a “hack,” but as the essential fuel that allows his body to take advantage of his rigorous exercise routine.

For Bob, the “proof is in the pudding”—or rather, the tomahawk ribeye. He is no longer watching the clock; he is planning which world record to break next.

“I’m enjoying a kind of a second youth… I feel better now than I did before. I don’t have to be convinced about anything. The results are what counts.”

Stephen: Ditching Plants for Peak Energy and Healing

For Stephen, a 51-year-old firefighter, the “standard” version of middle age was a terrifying prospect. By his late 30s, his 20s and 30s of “less-than-healthy” living began to catch up with him. He was 6’2″ and 260 pounds, struggling with obesity, depression, and severe anxiety.   The most frightening symptom, however, was his sleep apnea.
