For Jess, a health coach of 15 years, certified strength trainer, and former triathlon competitor, fitness was an integral part of her identity. From the outside, she appeared to be the picture of optimal health: athletic, highly disciplined, and successfully teaching clients how to manage macros, lose body fat, and build lean muscle.
Behind closed doors, however, Jess was trapped in a secret cycle of compulsive eating. She routinely used intense exercise—such as long-distance triathlon training and heavy powerlifting—to compensate for severe carbohydrate binges.
“I felt like a major impostor,” Jess admits. “I was teaching clients how to moderate carbs and time their meals, but late at night, I was sitting in front of the pantry binging on chips or jelly beans. I used fitness as a tool to justify a deeply disordered relationship with food.”
The Limitations of “If It Fits Your Macros”
Because she didn’t fit the standard physical profile of metabolic disease or severe obesity, her internal struggle went unnoticed. Following her husband’s heart attack, Jess began exploring optimal biohacking strategies, eventually discovering the zero-plant Carnivore diet through the work of Dr. Shawn Baker and Judy Cho.
She initially adopted the diet to eliminate persistent bloating, gas, and brain fog. But as she began cycling off the diet to allow “cheat days”—only to experience longer, harder-to-manage binges—she realized a deeper issue was at play. Despite having strong discipline and willpower, she was living with mid-stage food addiction, using hyper-palatable carbohydrates to regulate her nervous system during times of stress.
The standard fitness advice—moderation, tracking macros, and “flexible dieting”—was simply keeping the dopamine pathways in her brain firing, preventing her from ever achieving true biological or psychological calm.
Stabilizing the Physiology, Healing the Mind
Recognizing that real recovery required addressing both biology and psychology, Jess committed to a strict animal-based framework, anchoring her nutrition on ruminant meats, butter, eggs, sea salt, and water.
The shift allowed her to resolve her disordered patterns from the inside out:
- COMPLETE ELIMINATION OF “FOOD NOISE”: Within 24 to 48 hours of transitioning to zero-carb carnivore, her intense physical sugar cravings and persistent thoughts about food vanished.
- NERVOUS SYSTEM STABILIZATION: Removing ultra-processed carbohydrates and high-glycemic triggers allowed her baseline physiology to settle, freeing her from emotional eating cycles.
- UNCOMPROMISED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE: Fueling her body with animal fats improved her heavy strength training workouts. Lifting weights three to four times a week while fasted, she maintained her lean muscle mass without relying on sugar-laden pre-workout supplements.
- TOTAL METABOLIC HEALTH: Advanced clinical testing confirmed optimal metabolic health markers—including low fasting insulin, optimal fasting glucose, a zero Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) score, and low triglycerides.
Building the Carnivore Collective
Today, Jess uses her experience to help other women step off the diet roller coaster. Through her platform (@jesse_be_powerful on TikTok and Instagram) and her group coaching initiatives, she combines pure carnivore nutrition with structured recovery tools and progressive overload strength training.
For Jess, true health isn’t about white-knuckling through a macro spreadsheet—it’s about giving the body the dense fuel it needs to achieve complete food freedom.
“You can white-knuckle willpower for a period of time, but moderation doesn’t work for a food addict. Carnivore quieted the food noise and cleared my physiology, allowing me to finally heal my relationship with food. For the first time in my life, I have total food freedom.”
